Why come to the Taevaskoja children's camp?

Taevaskoja nature

The camp takes place just 700 m from the Suur Taevaskoda sandstone outcrop. We spend most of our time in the fresh air, surrounded by picturesque nature.

Hikes and movement

Canoe raft trips, kick scooter trips and walking hikes, adventure games and moving about in nature are an integral part of our varied camp programme.

New skills

At the Taevaskoja camp, activities aren't just there to fill time – every activity is carefully thought through and teaches children essential life skills such as communication, teamwork and initiative.

New friends

Shared activities, team games and evening events create good conditions for participants to get to know each other quickly and feel confident talking to one another.

Fewer screens, more activities

A thoughtfully planned camp with an emphasis on active movement, shared activities and communication. Smart devices are forgotten and young people get to enjoy life.

Tasty food

Tasty and healthy children's favourites such as pasta bolognese, various soups and main dishes. Even the pickiest eater will leave with a full stomach.

A fun and enriching summer camp

Children usually come to summer camp so that they won't get bored during the school holidays and always have something to do. Taevaskoja children's camp is not just another camp with a packed programme – here every activity is carefully thought through and planned. Activities are chosen to develop specific life skills.

The aim of Taevaskoja camp is to support young people in every area and to teach them how to solve various real-life problems. Learning at camp is non-formal. This means that activities such as workshops, group work and discussion circles develop skills that often aren't learned at a school desk. We support young people's independence, teamwork skills and self-expression, and develop their sense of responsibility.

Through non-formal learning, we develop social competences and give young people the skills they need for life. At camp, children make their first public performances. We develop creativity and digital skills, learn to eat properly and understand the rules of hygiene, and introduce children to their rights and responsibilities. All so that your child grows up to be a responsible person with a positive attitude to life.

Examples of non-formal learning:

  • various workshops (digital skills, mental health, financial literacy)
  • youth debates
  • team games
  • evening events
  • camp dances
  • survival in the forest
  • getting to know other cultures

Activities at Taevaskoja children's and youth camp

Camp programme

Mornings are filled with active pursuits such as canoe raft and kick scooter trips, adventure games and themed workshops.

In the afternoon there are theme-based activities, creative workshops (e.g. making friendship bracelets, dance) and practical workshops (digital safety or financial literacy).

Evening events give young people the chance to perform, organise and be part of a team.

For example, playback, the Taevaskoja TV show, a talent contest, a fashion show, a retro party or a debate night. On the last evening, by tradition, the Taevaskoja Agnes and Gabriel are chosen.

Meaningful and enriching theme days

Every year the camp has meaningful theme days with a variety of enriching activities and games. Depending on the length of the camp, there may be up to eight theme days in total.

Laager day 1

Getting-to-know-you and teamwork day

On the first day of camp we get to know each other, explore the camp and go over the safety rules. There are games that develop teamwork and tasks that require quick thinking, both on the camp grounds and out in nature. The evening ends with the traditional camp oath and games at Suur Taevaskoda.

Laager day 2

Adventure day

An active and adventurous day in nature. Depending on the camp session, the programme may include a canoe raft trip, orienteering, a photo hunt, team competitions and outdoor survival training.

Laager day 3

Culture day

On culture day young people can develop their creativity and get to know different cultures. The day may include painting, theatre and dance workshops, and activities led by international volunteers.

Laager day 4

Youth work day

A day full of practical activities, discussions and debates. Together with our partners, we hold workshops on financial literacy, mental health, digital safety or youth work.

Laager day 4

Health day

Health day features fun sports games such as the Taevaskoja Olympics and the Hero Run. There are also mental health workshops and creative activities related to mental well-being. These teach young people how to better understand themselves, notice others and ask for help when needed. All activities are manageable and suitable for children of all ages.

Laager day 4

Hiking day

On hiking day we set off on a longer hike into the heart of Taevaskoja's beautiful nature. To make the hike more exciting, we use nature bingo and observation tasks. The hikes are safe, guided and take into account the young people's age and abilities.

Laager day 4

Wish day and recognition day

The second-to-last day of the camp session is wish day, when the young people plan and organise the day themselves. This develops initiative, a sense of responsibility and cooperation skills. In the older session, wish day is also upside-down day, when the young people take over running the camp. On the last day we recognise and praise the children for a successful stay at camp and send them on their way home.

Accommodation and catering

Young people stay in rooms for 2–6 people. All houses have hot water and washing facilities.

Three main meals and one snack are served every day. Fresh, quality food, mostly made from local ingredients. The menu features children's favourites such as pasta bolognese and various soups and main courses. Even the pickiest eater will leave with a full stomach. If your child has allergies or intolerances, we can take them into account.

First time at camp?

Being away from home for a longer time for the first time can be exciting and a little scary at the same time. That's completely natural. Our camp counsellors help children settle in at camp, make new friends and cope with homesickness. When registering, parents can let us know if their child is coming to camp for the first time, wants to share a room with a friend or needs more support in adjusting.

Camp counsellors and team

Our camp counsellors are competent and hold level 5 and level 6 partial professional qualifications. All camp counsellors have a valid first aid certificate, which they renew every three years. A big plus is that many of our counsellors grew up attending the Taevaskoja camp themselves. They know the traditions and environment here and are able to see situations from a child's or young person's point of view.

All camp staff are checked against the criminal records register to ensure they have no restrictions on working with children. Our camp team is stable and dedicated, and many have a background of working with children in youth work, kindergarten or school.

Recognised camp

Taevaskoja children's camp has been awarded the camp quality label. The Education and Youth Board awards the label to those who follow all nationally set standards and also contribute more than the law requires. We are proud that, as a result of long work, we were the first recipients of the quality label in Estonia.

We have also received the Youth Camp of the Year 2019 award and were nominated for Youth Camp of the Year 2023.

What have children said about the camp?

“Taevaskoja is a great place to do things in a different environment. I spend more time outdoors and less on my phone. I’d like to go hiking too.”

Albert, 11

“At home I don’t try new things like this. At home I don’t eat such a varied diet. I’ve started eating properly – breakfast, lunch and dinner. I’ve started trying and eating different things.”

Emmaleene, 9

“At camp we had to wake up quite early and do exercises, and after that I wasn’t tired at all. I’m on my phone so much less and it doesn’t get on my nerves. I used to do yoga for a while and then couldn’t be bothered any more, and now I think I’ll start again, because then I wake up properly.”

Emma Nora, 11

Supporters and partners
